Grading Policy

Grades in French class are calculated and reported in numbers.  If you see a letter grade on an essay or project, the following number correspondences are made in my gradebook.

98         88        78        65

  95         85        75        50

  92         82        72

Homework:  Homework/Classwork is assigned daily, with few exceptions.  Use a separate sheet of loose-leaf paper for each assignment (if not a workbook page or handout).  Be prepared to hand in the assignment at anytime after it is due.  LATE HOMEWORK OR HOMEWORK LEFT IN YOUR LOCKER WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out the assignment(s) missed and hand them in to me when you return, unless you contact me to make other arrangements.  Each time your homework is not done, your homework average will decrease.  Your homework average is 20% of your marking period grade.  You gain 2 points on your overall quarterly average, when all homework is done on time for an entire marking period.

Correct Heading:      French I, III                                        Name

       Identify the Assignment                       Due Date

Tests:   are given at the end of each unit, monthly.  Any speaking/listening, 100-item vocabulary test, journal, composition, presentation, skit or research project or notebook check will also be counted as a test.  Tests will be recorded or counted twice.

Quizzes: are given often, several per unit, usually weekly, sometimes more, sometimes unannounced.

Make ups:  Tests and quizzes must be made up in a timely manner (within 5 school days).  They may be made up during any of our mutually free periods or after school.  Make all necessary arrangements (checking with me, securing a hall pass) before hand.  Remember, after 1 week, the grade is 0!  If you are absent the day before a test (always announced) or for an unannounced quiz, you will be expected to take that test or quiz when you return to school.

Quarterly grade:  80% of your grade is based on the average of your tests and quizzes.  Your homework average is 20% of your grade.  Remember that each test counts as 2 quiz grades.

Exemption Policy:  Any student whose 4-quarter average (including the verb final) equals 90 or better will be exempt from the final exam.  Exception:  Regents level III.

Please note:  I am available most days after school for extra help, often until 3:20 p.m., sometimes later.  You may call me at home until 9:00 p.m.  Or you may e-mail me, if you need help.  There are a message board and a mailing list you may join from the main page, if you wish to avail yourself of these technologies for help in French class.  I really do want you to be successful.
