Class Policies - Introduction

Learning French can be a lot of fun.  In order for that to be true for everyone, there needs to be a unanimous agreement on how we get along in class.  There needs to be a minimum standard of respect, responsibility, and resolution.

In order for French class to be a safe and fun place to learn, all action (or inaction) needs to be held up to the lens of appropriateness for class.  Everything that goes on can be looked at with the following filters:

Once we have that down, we can all take healthy and fun risks and venture into the strange realm of learning a foreign language and culture.

Student Responsibilities

 

I.      Be on time.  After 3 lates, you will be assigned 1 day of detention and for each additional time you are late to class.  On time means that you are in your assigned seat with your class materials open and you are ready to learn when the bells rings.

II.     Be prepared for class.  Bring all required materials every day to class.

1.      Sit in your assigned seat before the bell rings.

2.      Copy down your homework assignments.

3.      Take out your homework that is due and be ready to correct it or pass it forward.

4.      Have class materials on your desk (text, workbook, notebook, pen)

5.      Start your starter (do now).

III.    Be productive while in class.  Participate and use your French every day to help develop your language skills.

IV.    Required materials in addition to covered text and workbook:

1.      Dated Loose-leaf notebook which includes all of the following: (Do not use a spiral-bound notebook.)

·         grammar notes and daily starters (do nows)

·         vocabulary study (4-column, example sentences, 5 X each, or 4X5 cards) for the current unit

·         previous/corrected homework

·         classwork

·         verb cards

2.      French/English dictionary:  required for Level III and above, helpful for level I

3.      Pens:  blue or black ink, no pretty colors please

V.    Grading Policy

VI.    Please note the following procedures:

1.      Tests and quizzes should be written in ink.  Those written in pencil may not be disputed.

2.      Save all your work:  If I don’t have the grade, and you don’t have the proof, you will have to make up the work or accept a zero.

3.     Please use the bathroom between classes.  Bathroom passes are not issued during class, except for medical reasons.   You must sign out and back in, and must take a pass, for the lavatory.

4.      No food or beverages (water bottles) are to be brought to class.  If I see it, you throw it away.

5.      No electronic devices of any kind are to be brought to class.  If I see it, I take it to Student Services.

6.      No head gear of any kind is to be brought to class.  If I see it, I will take it for 24 hours.

7.      No work other than French is to be done in French class.  If I see it, I will take it for 24 hours.

8.      Use only respectful language in our class.

9.      Do not write on the desks, chairs or display boards.  If there is writing on your desk, please let me know,  so that you are not blamed.

10.     No one is ever excused from class without seeing me first (eligibility).  You must hand in on time what is due in class the day you are excused and be prepared for class the next day.

11.      Extra help will be given during my free periods or after school.  Ask for help before the test or the project  due date.  Do not wait until the last minute.

12.      Please stay seated until the bell rings at the end of class.

               13.     I don't let students go to their lockers or to the water fountain during class.  Please don't ask.

Teacher Responsibilities

 

I.    Be on time.  I will be on time to class.

II.    Be prepared for class.  I will bring all that I need to class every day.

1.      I will start taking attendance when the bell rings.

2.      I will have your homework assignments on the board and or screen.

3.      I will have a plan for the period that includes opportunities for listening, speaking, reading, writing, fun, review and assessment.

4.      I will have all class materials on my desk (text, workbook, planbook, pen)

5.      I will have on the board or screen a pertinent starter that focuses us (do now).

III.    Be productive while in class.  I will give every student the opportunity to participate and use French every day to help develop language skills.

IV.    Materials in addition to text and workbook, daily I bring

·         Content mastery – experience and fluency

·         Planbook detailing weekly activities day by day

·         previous/corrected homework

·         previous/corrected quizzes or tests

·         handouts:  focused, pertinent, fun

·         vocabulary flashcards

·         review puzzles and games

·         graphic organizers

·         study tips

V.    Grading

1.      Homework will be checked every day, with few exceptions.

2.      Tests and quizzes will be graded and returned within 2 days.

3.      Make ups:  I will be available for make-ups during my free periods and after school, every day, given 24-hours notice.

4.      Quarterly grades and 5-week marks will be available on time.  If you want an interim report, ask me (write it on a note) and I will print it and give it to you within 24 hours.

5.      Highest grades:  I will give a prize to the student with the highest grade in each of my French 1, 9B and III courses.  (One prize per course, not class or section.)

 

VI.    Please note the following procedures:

1.      I will make and copy handouts, quizzes and tests in time for our schedule.

2.      I will record all grades and discuss each assessment.

3.      I will be available for extra help before and after each assessment.

4.      I will issue bathroom passes for medical reasons only.

5.      I will ask you to throw food or beverages (water bottles) away.

6.      I will take electronic devices.

7.      I will take head gear.

8.      I will take class work done in French class for other classes.

9.      I will insist on everyone’s using only respectful language in our class.

10.    I will enforce a no graffiti rule in my class.

11.    I will consider requests for eligible students to be excused from class.

12.    I will dismiss all students when the bell rings.

13.    I will post all rules.

14.    I will give an opportunity to discuss all rules the first day of class.

15.    I will provide a paper copy of class policies for signatures.

16.    I will give a warning.

17.    I will call home.

18.    I will conference with a student, parent and/or administrator.

19.    I will write referrals.
