Office Hours: Periods 3, 8 and 2:30 p.m.

Prerequisites:  French 5 is designed for students who have completed French 4 or 3 semesters of college French

Required Textbooks:

Muyskens; Harlow; Vialet; Brière, Bravo 6th ed.  Boston: Heinle 2009.  Bravo!  Supplementary grammar practice will be used, in addition to a variety of internet links.  Students will read excerpted texts and short stories provided via in-class copies.

Course Description

For students who have completed one semester of intermediate college French (such as a AFRE 201) or four years of high school French.  This course provides a substantial review of the basics while expanding students’ knowledge of vocabulary and structure, and allows them to express themselves in a more varied and meaningful way, both orally and in writing.  As in the previous levels students have plenty of opportunity to interact in class.  Culture is explored in greater depth than in preceding levels.  Students read a variety of short texts during the course of the semester.

General Education Equivalence

This course meets the requirement for the SUNY General Education category of Oral Discourse Learning Objectives for Oral Discourse

Students will:

1. communicate ideas (creative, expressive, intuitive, intellectual) according to a specific set of criteria

2. establish and maintain an appropriate performer/audience relationship in a given oral exercise, and actively engage with listeners/audience

3. respond to and, where appropriate, incorporate listener's comments and questions

4. critique, orally or in writing, an oral performance

Grading:

            94 - 100 = A                87 - 89 = B+                77 – 79 = C+               67 – 69 = D+

            90 - 93 = A-                84 – 86 = B                 74 – 76 = C                 65 – 66 = D

                                                80 – 83 = B-                70 – 73 = C-                under 65 = E

Please be aware that any grade less than a full “C” will NOT be accepted for transfer at any other college or university other than SUNY Ulster.  This course is A-E graded and there are no S/U (pass/fail) options.

Grade Computations:

1.     Two quizzes will be given for each of the 3 lessons per chapter; one on vocabulary and one on grammar.  They are often given on the same day.

2.     Two tests will be given for each chapter, one oral (interactions), the other written (dossiers personnels).  Tests will be recorded twice in the teacher’s gradebook.

3.     Tests and quizzes represent 75% of the students’ grades.

4.     Homework is the complement component at 25% of the students’ grades.

5.     Homework is usually vocabulary, grammar or reading questions at the end of chapter selections.  On-line practice of dialogues and written essay drafts for each lesson will also count as homework.

6.     The Final Exam will include an oral and a written thematic question, each based on Bravo ! Chapters 1-5 and chosen at random.  The Final exam will count as one-fifth of the final course grade.

Attendance Policy:

Regular class attendance is important in developing good communicative skills and in maximizing student exposure to the language.  Therefore, the department has adopted the following attendance policy:

1.     Attendance WILL be taken daily.

2.     Each student WILL be allowed 5 absences during the semester.  This will include class activities (ex. trips) so choose wisely which activity you wish to do.  The only exception will be a serious illness (to be verified by a physician’s note) or bereavement.  Requests for exceptions will be granted only after serious deliberation by SUNY Ulster’s UHS program coordinator.  If a student is issued ISS, it is the student’s responsibility to make a mutually agreeable time with the teacher to make up the work.  If you exceed the number of 5 allowable absences, SUNY Ulster will NOT award college credit for the course.

3.     Tardiness or leaving class before the end of class is disruptive and disrespectful.  Every 3 instances will count as one absence.

4.     SUNY Ulster will NOT award college credit for anyone who has received OSS and requires home tutoring.  This course CANNOT be given on an independent study basis.

5.     Class will meet during local finals week, in order to have a full 90-day semester.

Standards of Academic Integrity

SUNY Ulster expects all members of its community to conduct themselves in a manner befitting its tradition of honor and integrity. Members are expected to assist the University by reporting suspected violations of academic integrity to appropriate faculty and/or administrative offices. Behavior that is detrimental to the University’s role as an educational institution is unacceptable.  Claims of ignorance, of unintentional error, or of academic or personal pressures are not sufficient reasons for violations of academic integrity.

The following are examples of the types of behaviors that are defined as academic dishonesty and are therefore unacceptable:

Plagiarism: Presenting as one’s own work the work of another person. Plagiarism includes paraphrasing or summarizing without acknowledgment, submission of another student’s work as one’s own, the purchase of prepared research or completed papers or projects, and the unacknowledged use of research sources gathered by someone else; Cheating on Examinations: Giving or receiving unauthorized help before, during, or after an examination; Multiple Submission: Submitting substantial portions of the same work for credit more than once;  Sabotage: Destroying, damaging, or stealing of another’s work or working materials; Unauthorized Collaboration: Collaborating on projects, papers, or other academic exercises that is regarded as inappropriate by the instructor(s); Falsification: Misrepresenting material or fabricating information in an academic exercise or assignment; and Bribery: Offering or giving any article of value or service to an instructor in an attempt to receive a grade or other benefits not legitimately earned or not available to other students in the class.  Circumventing Security: Users are prohibited from attempting to circumvent or subvert any system's security measures. Users are prohibited from using any computer program or device to intercept or decode passwords or similar access control information.

The violations listed above should be reported to the UHS Program Office immediately.  All parties involved will be directed accordingly.
